Raising the bar, shrinking the pipeline: Praxis 5113 qualifying scores and Alabama’s music teacher shortage
A study of how licensure thresholds, repeated testing, and academic preparation shape the music teacher pipeline at an Alabama HBCU.
Study summary
Using records from an HBCU music education program, this study compares simulated pass rates at four qualifying scores, examines retake burdens and score improvements, and considers academic readiness indicators. The findings show that a higher qualifying score sharply reduces pass rates and that candidates may face costly retake cycles. The article recommends a lower threshold, multiple measures, and targeted support.
