Bio

Dr. Russell J. Greene is an Assistant Professor and Coordinator of Music Education at Alabama State University, where he teaches music education coursework and conducts the ASU Wind Ensemble. He earned a B.S. in Music Education from Troy University and an M.A. and Ph.D. in Music Education from The University of Alabama.

Dr. Greene’s scholarship and professional work examine music teacher preparation, licensure and policy, and the ways data can be used to strengthen recruitment, retention, and equitable access in music education. He is particularly interested in translating research into usable tools for teachers—clear routines, efficient diagnostics, and pedagogical approaches that help students build healthy fundamentals from the beginning stages. His research on how band and orchestra directors infer the causes of performance errors has been published in the Journal of Band Research. He has articles in The Instrumentalist, Teaching Music, Ala Breve, and The Horn Call, and has presented at the Alabama Music Educators Association Conference, International Music Education Summit, and the NAfME National Music Research and Teacher Education Conference.

Before entering higher education, Dr. Greene taught in public and private school settings, supporting band programs through comprehensive instruction in marching and concert performance. He remains active as a composer and arranger, creating music for concert, chamber, and marching bands across the region, sold through RWS Music and RussellGreeneMusic. He is a member of NAfME, AMEA, CBDNA, SRME, ASCAP, the Suzuki Association of the Americas, and the International Horn Society.
